Proper Thigh Size

With the advancement of technology, people these days are becoming more and more conscious about their body shape, size, overall health and every other detail they can hold their hand on to. Where a century ago, in some areas of the world being a little chubby was considered attractive, the situation is not so in the current world. Slim is the new attractive. Models, actors, celebrities, singers- may it be any profession, a healthy, toned and attractive body has its impact on most of the aspects of life. We have our role models everywhere having the best body shape, and we would like to have a body like them, because not only that will lead us to a long healthy life, but also because of the aesthetic value it has.

It is a basic human instinct to gain knowledge and control over each little thing related to their lives. Hence, ‘micromanaging’ is not totally a new idea, and it is applicable to the need to assess every part of our bodies as well.

There are certain parts of our body that needs the most attention to enhance the beauty of our body in general. One of the few parts and a very important one among them is our thigh size. Proper thigh size is related not only to how good we look, but also if our lives are going to be disease free.

Proper & Ideal thigh size:

Proper thigh size largely relates to the sex, age, height, weight, ethnicity and the type of work an individual does. Therefore, it does not require mentioning that it will vary quite much from person to person. To call a thigh size ‘proper’ or normal according to any rule is quite impossible in cases of women as it mostly depends on how visually pleasing a thigh size is. The measurement of a 5’10” tall athlete definitely would not be same as a 5’2” tall gymnast, though determining the proper thigh size of an individual should be along with keeping her other body part measurements in mind. Here are some data to have an idea how much the thigh girth should be according to body weight, height, bust, waist and hip measurement:

Where to take the thigh measurement:

To determine the proper thigh size, the measurement should be taken wherever the thigh is the biggest. The meeting point of our buttock to thighs, just below the gluteal fold is the ideal place for this measurement.

Proper body positioning to take the thigh measurement:

Proper thigh size should be measured in erect or standing posture, both the feet placing close to each other and directed forwards. Measuring all body parts including thigh always at a specific time of the day is suggested.

How to take the thigh measurement:

Taking the measurement with a stretch resistant measuring tape is required, as the measuring tape can be elongated and give wrong results otherwise.

  1. First, stand in a relaxed manner in the proper position and take the measuring tape. Please remember to neither contract, nor flex your thigh muscles while doing so. It is advised not to measure just after workout or exercises, because out muscles tend to be contracted at those times.
  2. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your thigh for proper thigh measurement.
  3. Make sure that the tape lies flat on your body, so that you know you are taking the correct measure.
  4. Place the tape with the just pressure, not too loose or not too tight.
  5. Take at least two measurements to see if you get the same result and to make sure you have done it correctly.
  6. Record the measurement in a notebook, cellphone or your PC for further references.

Ideal thigh size and health issue:

Recent studies have shown that a thigh size of 55-60 cm is certainly better when it comes to cardio vascular diseases. The result came from an extensive prospective cohort study that was undertaken by the supervision of Dr. Berit Heitmann and Peder Frederiksen from Copenhagen University Hospital and Glostrup University Hospital, respectively and was sponsored by the Danish Medical Research Council.

In the study of a large population of both men and women showed that people who had a thigh circumference about 60 cm was less likely to suffer from any coronary heart disease or cardio vascular diseases. Thigh size exceeding 60 cm did not have any positive effect on protection against heart diseases though.

On the other hand, people with a thigh size less than 46.5 cm or 18.3 inches are found to be more prone to cardiovascular diseases.

So skinny thighs might be the dream of thousands of the female population, but as saddening as it may sound, skinny thighs that are too small and go in contrary to have a healthy, disease-free, longer life. Therefore, the clue is to maintain the proper thigh size that is healthy, as well as complement an individual’s body shape in the best way.
